A walk-behind tractor is the best solution for small farms and personal subsidiary plots. Among Russian users, a Russian-made option is popular, fully adapted to working conditions - the Salyut walk-behind tractor. An important component of a walk-behind tractor is the gasoline engine, which can be of any manufacturer, depending on the specific model.
The equipment is characterized by comfortable operation, reduced belt slippage, and a long service life of the weakest mechanism – the belt drive. Numerous modifications and improvements to the unit made it possible to obtain the best option, the efficiency of which is comparable to special equipment.
A modern walk-behind tractor can cope with any task, regardless of its degree of complexity. By purchasing attachments for the Salyut walk-behind tractor, the owner receives universal equipment that greatly simplifies work.
Purpose
Walk-behind tractors have a gasoline engine with a capacity of 3.5 to 7.5 liters. pp., which sets in motion various working elements. In this case, various trailed equipment is often used: rotors with special cutters, plows, mowers, snow removal equipment, carts, brushes, sprayers that can be installed on this walk-behind tractor.
The walk-behind tractor is designed for use in areas with mild climates. Its use as a soil cultivator will be especially profitable at ambient temperatures from +1 to +40°C. If you strictly follow the operating rules, maintenance and storage specified in the manual (supplied with the walk-behind tractor), the service life will be many times longer
Please note that the first 25 hours of operation of the unit are considered a period of “breaking in” of the engine (grinding in moving engine parts to each other) and other mechanisms. Therefore, you should not immediately use the full potential of the walk-behind tractor immediately from the moment of purchase.
To use a walk-behind tractor, you do not need any special skills, but it is necessary to take into account that the use of some trailed equipment requires certain skills. For example, during soil cultivation, the area between the cutter and the gearbox housing tends to become clogged with various debris (stones, grasses and other objects). If the space is still clogged, in order to avoid failure of the V-belts, it is necessary to stop the engine and clear the cutters of objects stuck in them.
Features of work
This technique is suitable for the following work:
- soil cultivation;
- plowing the land;
- formation of furrows;
- loosening and harrowing;
- grass cutting;
- cleaning garden paths;
- hilling, planting and harvesting;
- pumping water;
- cargo transportation;
- cleaning the area from snow.

In order to plow virgin lands using this walk-behind tractor model, you must follow several recommendations:
- The crust from the top layer of soil must be removed at minimum speed. So the turf goes away along with the crust.
- To raise lumps to the surface, you need to switch to first gear at medium speed.
- When processing the soil in several approaches, you should change the direction. It is recommended to work on dry ground.
Motoblock "Salyut" GC-190

Engines
The manufacturing plant took the choice of engines for its walk-behind tractors seriously: regardless of the popularity of the brand, before deciding to use a motor in the package, they all underwent thorough testing in the laboratories of the Scientific and Production Center for suitability for the Salyut-100.
The main parameters for getting a motor cultivator: stable operation, high service life, low noise and vibration (affect the safe duration of operation). Therefore, we can say that the Salyut-100 is equipped with only the best engines, and you can be sure that the product will last a long time.
The most popular among the Salyut-100 is the Chinese Lifan model 168F-2 - the relatively low cost of the engine affects the final price of the walk-behind tractor itself.
American engines are installed at 6.5 hp: Briggs & Stratton Vanguard and I/C and Kohler series. Japanese engines are represented by the Subaru EX17 and Honda GX 200 and the GC 190 model.
The most powerful in the line now is Salyut-100 with a Hwasdan H170F engine (Lifan 170F line) with 7 hp.
Gearbox
The new models of Salyut-100 walk-behind tractors are equipped with a new gearbox, the gears of which are made of high-strength steel. They can withstand enormous loads.
The gearbox is mechanical, oil-filled and fully geared - the latter distinguishes it favorably from the regulators of other walk-behind tractors, which may additionally contain a chain drive, which stretches, sags and can break due to excessive loads. It comes in a durable aluminum case, and the reliable gear drive has an increased service life of more than 3,000 operating hours.
The Salyut-100 gearbox is equipped with three gears (2 forward, 1 reverse), and the control lever with neutral positions between speeds is located on the steering column for convenience.
The oil level in the motor-cultivator gearbox is checked with a special dipstick, which is included in the spare parts kit.
Transmission
The gearbox of the Salyut-100 walk-behind tractor allows you to select the required speed during operation. Thanks to the gearbox with a convenient handle on the steering wheel, you can use the equipment to transport goods using a transport trolley.
The clutch mechanism on the Salyut-100 walk-behind tractor consists of the following parts:
- Drive V-belts (2 pcs.).
- Tension roller with lever.
- Return spring.
- Rod with control lever.
The V-belt drive transmits torque from the engine to the gearbox. By pressing the clutch lever, the belt tension roller rises, transmitting the rotation of the drive pulley of the running motor to the driven gearbox.
The engine pulley (SM) includes 4 strands of 2 pairs of different diameters. There are 3 grooves on the gearbox pulley, two of which are used by drive belts, and the middle one can be used to connect various active attachments. When rearranging the belts into streams of smaller diameter on the motor power take-off pulley, the Salyut-100 walk-behind tractor is adjusted to a lower speed mode, which is necessary to perform some work (plowing virgin soil, cultivating, etc.).
Review of the Neva model range
Despite the popularity of some models, the Neva MKM 75 motor-cultivator is considered to be such, the entire model range is distinguished by its quality. The basis of the technology was developed back in Soviet times, which introduced a number of features to the model:
- high-quality assembly;
- reliability;
- low cost of production;
- ease of operation;
- easy repair, that is, you can fix everything yourself.
When developing the model range, the manufacturer took into account all the main mistakes of competitors in its price segment and created a technique that is not inferior even to expensive foreign analogues. At the same time, the average reliability of the equipment is much higher. Also a distinctive feature is the availability of any parts, since universal elements are often used during assembly.
All these points make the Neva motor-cultivator in demand on the market. Such equipment can be used both on a personal plot and during large-scale agricultural work. It all depends on the type of model and its power.
MK 100 Neva Mini
A mini-cultivator is considered a separate series of equipment, which is characterized by low productivity and light weight. It is possible to lift even heavy soil, but in small areas. Neva Mini has a Subaru engine and a power of 4.5 horsepower.
In this video we will look at Neva motor cultivators:
Peculiarities:
- low noise thanks to the special design of the Robin-Subaru EX-13;
- most of the units correspond to other modifications of the model range;
- purpose – deep processing of the soil layer;
- if necessary, you can upgrade the equipment to a full-fledged walk-behind tractor and use attachments.
Most often, such a gasoline unit is used in small garden plots, as it is well controlled and capable of performing the required amount of work.
MK 100 07
Motor-cultivator Neva MK 100 07Z, reviews of which make it clear that this is one of the most successful models belonging to the 100 series. MK 100 07 is a prototype of a later version and differs only in the absence of protective disks. Both options can be used both for transporting small loads and for full-scale agricultural work.
MK 70
The Neva MK 70 motor-cultivator is considered the simplest and most convenient model that serves a small area. The model is characterized by very high maneuverability, which allows it to be used even in greenhouses. Also, with a low weight of 44 kg, the option has a high traction force. A gasoline walk-behind tractor can use some types of light equipment. It is worth considering that the MK 70 does not have a reverse gear, that is, movement is only forward.
MB 80
On the MB 80 you can install a set of 6 cutters, which come as standard.
Despite its low power, the unit is often used with various devices, including a mower and potato digger.
A feature of the Subaru engine is the lower location of the valve system. The unit has three speeds in total, but it also has a return gear, which makes the equipment convenient for small and narrow areas.
MK 100 05
MK 100 05 belongs to the hundredth series of the Neva. Most often, a low-power engine from Honda is installed on equipment. But this has little impact on performance, which allows you to complete work of varying levels of complexity. The main area of application is soil cultivation. The horizontal grip of the cutters is 1 meter, which is quite enough for the usual size of the area.
MK 100 06
MK 100 06 is also classified as the hundredth series. But there are some nuances here. The technique is used in small and medium-sized areas. A small power is not enough for heavy soil, such as loam. The main application is considered to be a small area with developed soil. The walk-behind tractor is one of the small units for gardening.
MK 200
MK 200 is considered a universal mechanism that can be converted into a small tractor. There is a professional powerful Subaru EX17 engine. The standard motor life reaches 5000 hours. A chain gearbox is used, which is protected from dirt and damage by an aluminum housing. It is possible to use any attachment.
It is also worth considering that most components can be removed during transportation, which makes transportation easier.
Mower
This walk-behind equipment turns the toughest farming jobs into a quick and easy process. They come in two types:
- segmented – for working on a flat surface with sparse, evenly growing grass;
- disc - suitable for mowing various types of grass. Taking into account the lodging, density and rigidity of the plants, you can adjust the rotation speed of the disks in combination with the speed of the walk-behind tractor.
Salute walk-behind tractors combine well with the Zarya mower. This disc tool even cuts down bushes and tangled grass. The result of mowing is similar to the work of a hand scythe - after its passage, neat windrows are left. It can be used not only for farm needs, but also in the city, for example, for mowing grass along roads.

User manual
Immediately after setting up the unit, it is necessary to run it in for at least 25 hours. During break-in, you need to work very carefully, without subjecting the device to excessive loads.
To ensure a long service life of agricultural machinery, winter preservation is very important. Failure to comply with the rules for storing a cultivator during cold weather can lead to serious damage and the need for major repairs. After completing gardening work and before the onset of cold weather, you need to do the following with the cultivator:
- drain the remaining fuel from the tank;
- disassemble the device and check all its parts, replace damaged ones with new ones;
- drain the oil from the gearbox and engine, filter it and fill it back in (if there is a large amount of residue in the oil, it is better to replace it with a new one, because the presence of oil is critical in the fight against corrosion);
- thoroughly clean the cultivator of dirt, then dry it so that no moisture remains on its parts;
- sharpen the cutting parts of your cultivator attachments;
- if your equipment has a battery, remove it and store it in a warm place all winter;
- Assemble the cultivator, place it in the place where it will be stored, and cover it with a tarp or film.
Some farmers advise leaving the gas tank not empty during conservation, but, on the contrary, full to capacity. On the one hand, the presence of fuel in the tank will completely protect it from corrosion, on the other hand, in the spring the fuel will still have to be replaced with fresh one, so the choice of the optimal wintering option is up to you.
At the beginning of the season, you need to inspect the unit, clean or replace all parts that have corroded during wintering. Then you need to replace the fuel in the tank and check the condition of the spark plug. After this, open the fuel valve, close the choke, and start the engine. The presence of smoke when the engine is first started indicates oil combustion, and not a breakdown.

Operation and maintenance of Salyut walk-behind tractors
The success of using cultivators depends entirely on the user. If you follow the standards specified by the manufacturer in the operating instructions, they will last for decades. For this:
- After purchase, a new unit is run in for 25 hours to break in spare parts, which implies a gentle short-term load according to the video instructions;
- The run-in device is checked for belt tension and integrity of connections;
- After every 25 hours worked, monitor the oil level in the gearbox and top up if necessary;
- 50 hours - change the lubricant in the engine crankcase;
- 100 hours – clean the walk-behind tractor from dirt and dust deposits, change the gear oil and renew the belts;
- 300 hours – lubricate the throttle and clutch cables with oil.
Auto mechanic, specializes in agricultural equipment
Modern special equipment includes a lot of different components. There are main power parts, as well as auxiliary mechanisms and body devices. Each individual element is responsible for its work, which is why a full-fledged device performs the task assigned to it. Almost every modern equipment has in its design an element such as a gearbox. This mechanism has the purpose of uniformly converting and transmitting torque. In this case, it is necessary to consider in detail the gearbox of the Salyut brand walk-behind tractor.
Attachments
Attachments for Neva motor cultivators are being developed.
According to the manufacturer's specifications, the following additional mounted and trailed equipment is produced for Neva motor cultivators.
Installation of cutters
Milling cutter
Depending on the model and modification of the cultivator, the device can have from 2 to 6 cutters. Six cutters is currently the maximum number for items available for sale and production.
The additional set of cutters contains two units of parts, one additional for each side of the cultivator.
Installation diagram of cutters on MK-100
Fastening of cutters on all Neva motor-cultivators is done manually, using bolts, nuts and an adjustable wrench. The convenience of installing an additional pair or replacing the cutters with lugs is provided by the front wheel - the cultivator can be mounted on the wheel and quickly change or add a hitch.
Do not store cutters dirty, monitor the integrity of the cutter blade and periodically sharpen the knives on them, or replace them with new ones.
Hillers
Okuchnik ON-2
For motor cultivators of different series and modifications, different hillers are used.
For example, for the MK70 and MK80 series, the manufacturer recommends purchasing an OH-2 hiller. To install it, a hitch is required, which must be purchased separately. This hitch is universal and is also suitable for attaching the “Mole” plow to these devices.
For the MK100 and MK200 series, the manufacturer recommends buying hillers of the following models: STV-NPD, single-row OND, double-row STV, single-row disc. All hillers, except for the two-row OND, are attached to the cultivator using a universal hitch N (01.06.50.00.00); double-row OND is attached using a hitch 005.09.1600.
Potato digger KV-2
Potato digger KV-2
The KV-2 potato digger is designed for the MK-70 and MK-80 series of cultivators. No coupling is required to aggregate it with the device. Feedback from farmers confirms that some craftsmen make such additional parts on their own, based on the individual characteristics of the motor cultivator.

For the Salyut-100 walk-behind tractors, the entire list of mounted and trailed equipment is produced at our own enterprise. But thanks to its versatility, the unit can use equipment from any other manufacturer with equal success.
For ease of consideration, we will divide the equipment into groups according to the type of fastening:
Mounted on the gearbox axle:
- Mills – used for soil cultivation.
- Metal wheels with lugs - used when working with a plow. For hilling, wheels of three diameters are produced, this allows you to work during different periods of vegetation.
- Weighting agents – serve to increase the weight of the walk-behind tractor when operating conditions require it.
- Pneumatic wheels – can be used with almost any equipment.
