History of the creation of VTZ-2048A

This model, launched into production in 2001, replaced the T-45 “Vladimirets” family of tractors, inheriting from them the engine, simplicity of design and good performance. At the same time, the plant’s design bureau tried to make the VTZ-2048A more universal, significantly expanding the scope of its application and eliminating all the shortcomings that were identified during the years of operation of the T-45.

It should be noted that changing the name of the enterprise in 2003 to “motor-tractor” was completely justified. Indeed, from the very beginning of their work to this day, Vladimir tractors are equipped with diesel engines only of their own design, which are produced right there.

And the history of Vladimir tractors began in the war year of 1943, when it was decided to build a new enterprise for the production of wheeled tractors, on the northern outskirts of the city, behind the old Yuryevskaya outpost.

The plant began to produce products in an unfinished state - in the spring-summer season of 1944, tractors were assembled here right in the open air. Fierce fighting continued on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. But by the date of its opening (April 25, 1945), the enterprise had already produced more than five hundred Universal-2 tractors (the Soviet analogue of the American Farmall).

All subsequent tractor models were created by the plant's own design bureau. These are the cabless “DT-24” (1955-1958) and “T-28” (1958-1965) - by the way, cotton-growing modifications of these agricultural machines continued to be produced for the Uzbek SSR in the 70s and even in the 80s of the twentieth century century.

This is a multifunctional, compact, most popular tractor of the T-25 Vladimirets enterprise (840 thousand units of this equipment have been produced since 1972). This is also a direct “relative”, the ancestor of the “VTZ-2048A” - the T-45 “Vladimirets” tractor.

While maintaining the same small dimensions, it became much more powerful than the T-45. And he could already compete in performance with stronger “high school students” - “T-40” by Lipetsk Minsky.

These important qualities ( compactness, versatility and efficiency combined with solid power ) were continued in the modern model of the Vladimir motor-tractor.

This model went into series production in 2001, and, along with the even more modern development of the design bureau, it became very popular in the market of Russia and other republics of the former Union. Both one and the other modern “Vladimirets” were created with an eye on their “classmates” of European and Chinese production, and with the determination to surpass them both in performance characteristics and in attractiveness in price.

Unlike most Soviet agricultural engineering enterprises, the Vladimir Motor and Tractor Plant in the 2000s continued not only to produce products, but also to develop. However, in the 2010s, the enterprise, included in the Agromash/Tractor Plants hodling, plunged into a protracted crisis. As a result, the plant was closed and finally liquidated in July 2020. “VTZ-2048A”, like a number of other new developments, remained in the rank of “promising”, without receiving a worthy continuation.

Cabin design and features

The export version of the tractor was its modification “VTZ-2048AE” , with a D-130/10 engine. It was created specifically for supply to European markets, and in 2006 it was certified to the second level of European noise and toxic emissions standards, as well as other environmental standards.

The need for this certification was due to the fact that more than 60 percent of Vladimir tractors have always traditionally been supplied to Eastern European countries. With the accession of the former socialist countries and the Soviet Baltic republics to the European Union, it was necessary to modify the tractor to European standards.

The VTZ-2048AE modification was exported to Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, and Germany; as well as to Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

In the second version of the tractor, the VTZ-2048AS Plowman , the D-130 diesel engine was boosted and equipped with a turbocharger.

This agricultural machine could even be called a competitor to the Belarusian MTZ-82. Yes, the tractor from the Minsk plant has 80 horsepower versus 45 from the Vladimir plant. However, in terms of economic efficiency, the VTZ-2048AS Plowman looks much more advantageous: it costs almost half as much and consumes 1.5-2 times less fuel, with slightly lower productivity.

This tractor “inherited” the engine from its predecessor, the T-45. This is a 4-stroke, 3-cylinder, in-line 3.12-liter diesel engine “D-130” with a power of 45 hp. and air-cooled.

This engine is distinguished by the fact that it produces high torque (177 Nm/18.1 kgf-m) over a wide speed range. This makes the technique more “flexible” - both simply in movement and in working with a load.

The specific fuel consumption of the D-130 engine is declared by the manufacturer as 236 g/kWh at rated power and 241 g/kWh at operating power.

The weight of the D-130 engine, depending on the configuration, ranges from 323 to 340 kg.

Torque is transmitted to the tractor chassis using a “generation-tested” manual gearbox, which has not undergone any major changes since the T-25 “Vladimirets”. It has eight forward and six reverse gears.

In general, over the years of its operation, the D-130 engine also managed to earn a reputation as an extremely reliable, unpretentious and durable engine. By the way, in addition to the VTZ-2048A and Agromash-50/TK tractors currently produced by the enterprise, this diesel engine is also installed on welding machines and cement trucks.

Dimensional and mass indicators, transmission and control features

As noted earlier, one of the main advantages of the new tractor was its increased horsepower from 25 to 45, while maintaining almost the same modest overall dimensions as the good old T-45.
