Tuning has always been considered a way to distinguish your car from the general monotony. The UAZ 3303, which you are going to tune, must have a reinforced bottom, and if the car does not have this characteristic, you need to take care of installing it. The reasons for the need to provide underbody protection are the frequent occurrence of large branches falling under the vehicle.

Winch installation

Now let's move on to the winch. On off-road terrain, situations often arise in which you will have to get out of trouble on your own. When you are stuck in the mud and there is not a single soul around, the winch will become your savior. In addition, you will have the opportunity to help your comrades on the road. On the UAZ 3303 you can install both electric and electric. The difference between these types is significant, because the latter is more reliable, and it is preferred by most off-road enthusiasts. The advantage of hydraulics is that they are more powerful and are powered by a motor that builds up pressure. Its electric competitor operates through a battery, which shortens the battery's lifespan.

To strengthen the cabin, a kenguryatnik is installed. Many people have a preconceived idea that only passenger cars can be tuned, but this is not the case. Increasing power, adding new elements to the interior and chassis, inserting additional lighting devices - all this can be done on other vehicles, such as trucks, minibuses and tractors, for example. In this case, we will consider tuning the UAZ 39094 “Farmer” with your own hands, which, although quite difficult, is still possible. It is enough to have a little knowledge in the field of technology.

Initially, you need to answer the question: under what conditions will this workhorse be used and what responsibilities will be assigned to it? This is an important point, as it will affect the degree of tuning. Simple trips to the forest to pick up firewood or mushrooms do not require a complete redesign of the wheelbase and chassis, since this car is not in danger of severe off-road conditions.

Such an “easy” upgrade may include replacing the rims with a larger size (optimally 31 inches), as well as remodeling the interior according to the personal wishes of the car owner. You can also make the body either covered or open - this is also based on personal criteria.

It is worth noting right away that it is quite difficult to do a complete tuning of the UAZ 39094 “Farmer” with your own hands for the reason that the whole process will take a lot of time. However, if it is there, and you also have the desire and reserves of finance, then you can safely begin.

UAZ 4x4 for off-road travel


Anyone who has been where instead of roads there are only directions knows that a body raised above the ground means a lot when driving along deep ruts or potholes. The increased distance between the wheel axles and the bottom makes it possible to install large diameter wheels.

This allows you to slightly increase the ground clearance of the UAZ farmer or tablet, while tuning increases cross-country ability. The mud is becoming not such a big problem. The body lift can be achieved using spacers installed between the body and the “cushion” through which the body is secured to the frame. To perform a body lift you will need:

  • ready-made set of spacers for UAZ made of caprolon or polyurethane;
  • set of wrenches;
  • jack;
  • elongated bolts, the length of which is equal to the length of the original bolts with the thickness of the spacer.

The modification consists of unscrewing or cutting off the bolts securing the body to the frame, jacking up the body and placing spacers on the standard “cushions.” After this, the body is lowered and secured with new long bolts through the spacer. At the same time, the steering column moves up slightly. To eliminate its tension, loosen the fastening of the crosspiece and the steering shaft, thereby lengthening it. The cutout in the housing for the speaker is enlarged.

Unexpectedly, it is impossible to engage reverse and 4th gears. The problem is eliminated by enlarging the hole for the gear shift lever. This completes the farmer's DIY UAZ tuning.

Another way to install wheels with a larger diameter is to cut the wheel arch. The operation consists of using a grinder to remove part of the metal along the previously drawn contour of the new arch and process the cut by welding a curved profile pipe along its edge. In addition to the opportunity to install larger wheels, tuning on a used UAZ 69 makes it possible to get rid of the rusted part of the arch. The car takes on a more presentable appearance. After welding, the seam is cleaned, puttyed and painted (Fig. 3).

Step-by-step moments in tuning UAZ 39094 Farmer

The very first stage is changing wheels,

as in the “easy” upgrade. In order for the car to overcome serious off-road conditions, it is recommended to install tires of 33-35 inches, which, of course, will entail changing the rims. To create an optimal balance between cross-country ability, good appearance and not invest a lot of money at the first stage, it will be enough to purchase 15-inch wheels.

Stage No. 2 - suspension and body lift.

These structural elements should be replaced so that the newly installed wheels do not touch the arches when turning. In addition, passability will improve in those places where the road seems unsuitable for travel due to stones, large branches, boulders, and so on. To prevent damage to the arches, it is enough to place a small spacer between the frame and the body. Sometimes it happens that it is necessary to trim the arches of the wings, making them more streamlined. The suspension lift is upgraded by installing additional leaves in the springs. It is also recommended to add long-stroke shock absorbers to this, which will ensure a comfortable ride over logs, bumps, ditches, stones, and so on.

Stage No. 3 - installation of the winch.

UAZ 39094 “Farmer” will work ideally with a hydraulic or electric winch. Hydraulics are more reliable and produce more power, but they are slow and do not work when the engine is off. In addition, such designs are somewhat more expensive. Electric ones are easy to install and can work autonomously. This type of winch can be easily dismantled. Its disadvantage is its rather high power consumption, as a result of which the installation of an additional battery will be required.

Now the car is more or less ready to overcome road obstacles, but it is too early to give it a crash test.

Stage No. 4 - body strength and interior safety.

At this stage you need to install a power kit. First of all, a strong bumper is installed to absorb any strong impacts. Special power thresholds are installed on the sides, which can play another useful role in the future: becoming stops for jacks. You can also add additional protection to the engine compartment, fuel tank and axle housings.

Stage No. 5 - sealing of units.

This stage will be relevant for those who plan to drive a tuned “Farmer” through areas where there are ponds and swamps. In order to increase the safety of electrics and other devices, it is recommended to move them a little higher, using wires with high-quality insulation.

Stage No. 6 - disc brakes.

Thanks to their installation, you can significantly increase safety when driving on any surface. An important fact: the new UAZ 39094 “Farmer” models are already equipped with such brakes at the factory assembly stage, so you must definitely check this point so as not to change the “trash for soap”.

Stage No. 7 - tuning the interior of the UAZ 39094 Farmer.

Everything is simple here: the car owner’s imagination is the only correct guide to action. For greater comfort, you can install large leather seats with a high seating position, install an audio system in the dashboard and place speakers throughout the cabin.

Can I change it in my car?

In fact, you can change anything that pleases the soul of the demanding owner of the UAZ 69; tuning involves replacing any unit or component. The main thing is to decide for what purpose the changes are being made. In order to show off an unusual UAZ, tuning can be limited only to external changes: body kits, turning the UAZ into a convertible, painting it in camouflage.

Fishermen or hunters will want to increase the ground clearance, install a snorkel, change the wheels and make a number of changes to both the appearance and design, turning the car into a full-fledged Gelendvagen. And for sports fans, even this will not be enough, and they will bring the UAZ 452 (loaf or UAZ tablet) to complete perfection.

It is necessary to analyze several feasible changes for common car models of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. They are suitable for UAZ 39094 farmer 4x4, for gearbox UAZ 3151 or export UAZ 31514, UAZ 31512, UAZ 31519.

Interior tuning

On a UAZ Farmer, interior tuning should begin by removing the factory interior trim and carrying out heat and sound insulation of the ceiling, walls, doors and bottom. All surfaces are covered with thin matte materials, and the bottom is additionally treated with a special mastic. It is better to fasten a durable, dark-colored fabric over the insulation that does not absorb dust and moisture.

External tuning

It is not advisable to leave the side body unchanged, since this area can be used more productively. The best solution is to make an insulated booth with an expeditionary roof rack. To carry out external tuning of a UAZ Farmer with your own hands, all you need is a set of tools that are found in every garage.

To work you will need:

  • roulette;
  • Bulgarian;
  • welding machine;
  • screwdrivers;
  • spanners;
  • electric drill;
  • paint brush;
  • profile pipe 100x50 mm;
  • primer;
  • automotive enamel.

The frame of the change house is made of profile pipes. At the same time, a ladder and an expeditionary trunk with sides are made. After welding the frame to the frame, it is cleaned of rust, scale and dirt. Metal should be painted with UV-resistant paint.

The frame can be upholstered with waterproof plywood filled with basalt wool or with ready-made façade sandwich panels. You can make your car more attractive in the following ways:

  1. Replace the bumper. Instead of a standard part, a powerful product is installed, equipped with fangs and a winch.
  2. Carefully trim the wheel arches and cover them with plastic. Install wider BFG Mud-Terrain KM2 wheels 285/75/R16 and cast metal wheels from Off-Road Wheels.

Do-it-yourself external tuning

The simplest modification is to change the appearance of the UAZ. You can start by repainting the body in camouflage colors. In this case, you need to take into account the original color: the UAZ 69 4x4 and UAZ 452 “loaf” cars were produced in 3 main colors (gray, beige, khaki).

The coloring of the UAZ 3909 is the same; tuning by repainting it in camouflage begins with the selection of brown, dark green and black colors for painting the UAZ, khaki, dark gray, white and black for an initially gray car. For beige, dark brown, yellow (light) and black are recommended. For painting you will need:

  • 2 cans of paint of each color;
  • masking tape.

Preparatory work involves removing body kits, mirrors and anything else that will be difficult to remove paint from. The glass is covered with paper, and it is advisable to treat the body with an anti-corrosion compound. After this, the contours of the spots are marked in random order with tape and painted. It is important to remember that the lightest shade of stain is applied first, and the black color is left for the end of the work. After drying, the removed parts are returned to their places, and at this point the tuning can be considered complete.

A more complex option is the installation of power body kits (bumpers, kangurin, winch and trunk, lighting fixtures). These accessories are purchased in specialized stores and installed according to the attached instructions. Power front and rear bumpers, in addition to decorative functions, will serve well for those who like to travel to uninhabited places.


Depending on the complexity of the operating conditions, you should choose the thickness of the steel from which they are made. Powerful body kits will significantly make the Gelendvagen heavier. But this will allow the car to go off-road more easily and shift its center of gravity down, giving more stability.

Kengurin is a metal arc that is welded to the top of the bumper. This is protection against damage to the front part of the body and headlights in collisions with an unexpected obstacle. A winch will come in handy if you choose an untraveled place for travel. Even a Russian Gelendvagen can get stuck in the mud. It is worth choosing a winch with a force of at least 5 tons so that its power is enough in any difficult case. A roof rack allows you to purchase additional cargo space.

It should be taken into account that this load is capable of shifting the center of gravity upward, which, with a lateral roll, can lead to the UAZ 4x4 overturning. Additional lighting fixtures (“chandelier” or light bar) are usually placed on the trunk. After such tuning, the UAZ 4x4 can look attractive (Fig. 1).

If you have welding and metalworking skills, you can make a power bumper yourself by cutting and bending a channel of the required thickness. The principle of manufacturing such a bumper is shown in Fig. 2 (photo 1 shows the places of cuts, bending and welding, photo 2 shows a finished bumper with a kangaroo made from an ordinary small-diameter water pipe). A similar design can be designed independently for the UAZ “loaf”.

For 31512, tuning (UAZ convertible) is simple: remove the canvas roof, cut off the door arches, leaving only the windshield with the frame. Since such modifications are made to increase comfort, they usually supplement it by reupholstering the seats in the cabin and installing metal arches over the open body. A set of them can be purchased at a tuning accessories store.

Tuning technical parameters

Long hauls over rough terrain require the vehicle to have increased strength and reliability.

You can improve the technical characteristics of your car as follows:

  1. Reinforce the frame with additional pads. After tuning, the weight of the vehicle increases by several hundred kilograms.
  2. Equip the steering system with a hydraulic booster. This option will make it easier to drive in difficult road conditions.
  3. Increase the vehicle's ground clearance by installing special gaskets between the axles and springs. To increase the load capacity, install pneumatic cylinders on the rear axle, controlled from the cab.
  4. Replace the belt fan with 2 electrical analogues, activated by a sensor. This will provide better engine cooling when running at high speeds and low speeds. Improving air flow is achieved by making additional holes in the hood.
  5. Install a self-locking differential on the rear axle. This solution will greatly improve the maneuverability of the UAZ Farmer in wetlands and water-filled dirt roads.
  6. Replace standard shock absorbers with reliable and durable products from the Australian company Ironman. These devices are characterized by high strength, load-bearing capacity, combined with an instant response to vibrations of any amplitude.

Somehow too often the editors began to receive letters asking them to talk about their experiences installing diesel engines in UAZ. Is it not enough for you to hear the howling of the transmission, the grinding of springs, the squeaking of brakes and other acoustic companions of the legend of the domestic off-road? Also add some diesel roar (probably to drown out all of the above at once)?

The 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine OM616 was chosen as a diesel donor heart (since the late sixties it was installed on the Mercedes-Benz 123 series and some commercial vehicles), and the experimental body was the cargo-passenger UAZ-39094 “Farmer” produced in 1995. The 2.4-liter diesel produces 75 hp. at 4200 rpm and has a maximum torque of 145 Nm at 2400 rpm, that is, it shows approximately the same characteristics as the “native” engine of the Ulyanovsk plant. Some reduction in power is compensated by the characteristic diesel torque curve and low fuel consumption.

There is not much point in describing the “tadpole” in detail. Those who have it are already sufficiently aware of it, but those who do not have it are unlikely to be able to understand the typical and atypical features of this Soviet forward control. Well, perhaps we should list the main features of this car. Double cab with three doors, branded awning on the body, glass washers and wipers from Toyota. Civil axles are equipped with cam locks, wheel bearings are replaced with German ones. The cooling system has a fan. The exhaust system has been completely replaced. The steering is without power assistance, but the brakes, on the contrary, are power-assisted. Moreover, the brake booster is vacuum and also serves as a “starter”... Before starting the car, you need to vigorously press the brake pedal several times, creating the necessary vacuum in the intake manifold, then you should wait until the glow plugs warm up and turn the key. If everything is done correctly and without haste, the engine generously fills the cabin and the surrounding area with a thoroughbred roar, flavored with the clattering of valves and other unheated parts of its middle-aged cast-iron heart. A minute to warm up, knee to chest (otherwise I, long-legged, won’t be able to get on the clutch pedal), a long push of the unsynchronized lever at the “first-second” gearbox - and off we go. The transmission gears began to move suspiciously quietly, the “tadpole” twitched, but did not move. Transfer case in neutral? It seems not... I open the door, hang out of the cab, look at the rear wheels - they are spinning, but the car does not move. Yeah, I see! The characteristic weight distribution with a solid “emphasis” on the front, aggravated by the heaviness of the diesel engine (additional weight of about 60 kg), relieved the rear wheels so much that on ice they completely refused to push the car, despite the inter-wheel lock being activated. Oh, should we be sad! Hubs, go to battle! The “tram” control lever for the transfer case “until it clicks” - and, strictly speaking, off we go. Great thing - all-wheel drive!

A strongly protruding awning, significantly limiting the view to the rear, and a heavy steering wheel force you to be thrice attentive when maneuvering, especially when there is a black Suburban with a flashing light on the roof on the right, and a Mercedes, also black, on the left (they conspired, or what?). By the way, color is another strong point of our today’s hero. Agree that sky blue metallic is not often found on UAZ vehicles. The quality of painting of the cabin and body is good, but the true nature of the “Ulyanovsk” still takes its toll, persistently emerging through the alien shine with characteristic red dots. Leaving the parking lot instantly makes you remember the techniques of power steering and shifting gears with double squeezing. And in general, until you accelerate, the clutch firmly holds the title of the most popular pedal. Owners of “non-synchronized” UAZ vehicles, remembering their first trips, will certainly understand me. However, they will also confirm that the problem can only be solved with practice, and, fortunately, quite quickly...

A few words should be said about the engine itself. This engine can be called a classic passenger diesel engine of the sixties: pre-chamber, overhead valve, with valves driven by levers and a timing chain. The injection pump is driven by the same double-row chain with a hydraulic tensioner. Bosch in-line fuel pump. In general, motors last an exceptionally long time; it is not for nothing that they are called “millionaires”. There are few disadvantages: oil seal packing at the rear end of the crankshaft (however, this is not news for UAZ owners), noise and heavy weight. The main thing is that the overall dimensions of the OM616 turned out to be, as they say, snug – the five-cylinder OM617 no longer fit into the short engine compartment of the “tadpole”. The motor and spare parts for it can be found at a reasonable price at dismantling advertisements, and “recapitalizing” it is not a problem at all.

In addition to overhauling the engine, the specialists from the tuning company who rebuilt the UAZ changed the bearings in the gearbox and transfer case, installing German ones. Almost all more or less significant components and mechanisms of the car were subject to revision. The joining of the engine and transmission is carried out according to the classical scheme. The clutch housing from an old Mercedes-Benz is connected through a washer plate, and the UAZ gearbox is connected to it through an adapter plate. As for the Luk clutch and Koni shock absorbers, they have already proven themselves to be the best. And also about acoustics... The suspicious silence of the transmission, as it turned out, is due not only to German bearings, but also to the presence of special noise-reducing oil in the boxes. Wheel couplings "Elmo" are standard, locking "Kurgan", type BTR-60.

The interior decoration is done really well. A separate stove for the passenger compartment, a folding table, seats from some foreign car, neat upholstery of the cabin and carpet covering the engine compartment cover, if not refined, then certainly made the spartan interior of the car more comfortable. At the same time, more buttons and switches were added to the front panel. The rear row of seats can hardly be called comfortable, but given the purpose of the car, their comfort is considered “necessarily sufficient.”

As for the driving differences, the most noticeable was the decrease in dynamics. “Tadpole” has become dumb, that’s a fact. And in order to accelerate at least at the level of the production model, the diesel engine must be cranked, and it clearly does not like this. After exceeding a certain speed level, the noise becomes difficult to bear. It is possible to maintain a speed of more than 80 km/h, but it is unpleasant. An unloaded car yaws and shakes mercilessly on small uneven surfaces. We, of course, were interested in testing the off-road qualities of the converted “Farmer”. Shallow melted snow and mud puddles were easily passed through in the second speed of the top row, but with the front axle connected. It was unpleasant to drive the car with rear-wheel drive, it was carried away, the slightest rut led to wobbling and forced the heavy steering wheel to be vigorously turned, hitting the hands. But in the 4x4 version, handling became much better. The torque of the diesel engine was enough to drag along at almost idle speed, to crawl up small hills, but on the third, the engine began to give out and the UAZ lost speed at the slightest obstacle under the wheels. The transition to a lower row significantly improved the situation, allowing not only to increase the speed, but also to gain a certain margin of flexibility.

Diagonal hanging once again confirmed the opinion that cam locks of the armored personnel carrier do not work under such loads. Although popular rumor ascribes to them wonderful life-saving properties, they are good on simple obstacles, such as a snowy section of the road, shallow mud or sand. However, good suspension travel, sufficient weight of the car, decent tires and good traction at the bottom helped us overcome fairly deep trenches without any problems, and this despite the fact that sometimes the diagonally located wheels came off the ground. And the fact that blocking does work became obvious in the virgin snow. Having turned off the front axle and given the gas, we were pleased to note that both rear wheels were polishing the snow, starting to move almost simultaneously.

Of course, you are waiting for some conclusions. Of course, diesel is the ideal engine for UAZ. Cost-effectiveness, elasticity, high traction characteristics are advantages. There are also many disadvantages. Winter start-up is the most obvious. The significantly greater weight of the engine can become critical for a sports car (trophy or trial, it doesn’t matter). The cost of the alteration (which is about 3,000 USD with a used engine and somewhere around 8,000 with a new one) destroys the main advantage of the Ulyanovsk SUV - its availability. The problems of dynamics, increased noise and vibration are in principle solvable (turbodiesel of sufficient volume, insulation). Registration with the traffic police is a headache, although specialized companies have gone through this too. Cost-effectiveness is also an issue. An old, weak diesel engine can easily “gobble up” 15 liters of diesel fuel during normal operation. In addition, in the event, God forbid, of a serious accident, restoring a diesel UAZ will cost significantly more than repairing a standard version.

In general, a lot depends on how skillfully the conversion was carried out. Today there are already companies with experience in similar work, but they also keep the price level. Nevertheless, there are more and more people wanting to convert their “goat”, which means that a reduction in the flow of “diesel” letters is not expected in the near future.

Before you start tuning the UAZ “Farmer”, you should decide for what purposes this car will be used. This will determine what kind of alteration you need: complete or light. Minor tuning is suitable for drivers who do not intend to navigate heavy off-road conditions. Forays to pick mushrooms or go fishing, travel through the countryside, travel between regional centers - a simple modification of the UAZ-39094 is enough for all this.

Such improvements do not make significant changes to the design of the vehicle. They usually include the installation of 31-inch mud tires and a winch with a power kit. To ensure the comfort of the driver and passengers, the interior can be remodeled.

Complete tuning of the UAZ Farmer involves making major changes to the design of the base car, so it takes quite a lot of time and is best done in stages. Moreover, this modification is needed only by those who are seriously planning to turn their “Farmer” into an all-terrain vehicle capable of driving on real off-road conditions.

Compared to the previous Farmer, the new one starts calmly, without convulsions or shudders - it picks up speed happily. The clutch, however, grabs at the very top. But it’s okay, I got used to it. I also got used to the sweeping shifts of the five-speed manual.

The ride quality and energy efficiency of the suspension are impressive. The Farmer passes even the monstrous-looking pit with barely noticeable swaying. That’s why in regions with bad roads Ulyanovsk cars are so valued! They also love UAZs for their excellent cross-country ability. I was running around like crazy through the back streets of the factory territory in order to park the car. In vain. He overcame all the proposed obstacles using only rear-wheel drive. I only had to connect the front axle a couple of times, and it didn’t even come down to downshifting.

For those for whom the all-terrain qualities of the UAZ are not enough (there are some), starting in July they will be offered a version with a rear cross-axle differential lock. A jeeper's dream! It will apparently raise the level of cross-country ability to a very high level. I hope in the summer, when a car with a lock falls into our hands, we will find a worthy obstacle for it.

The first stage of complete tuning of the UAZ “Farmer” is, as in the case of light modifications, the replacement of wheels

. Only to overcome complete off-road conditions with its soft soils, 31-inch tires may not be enough. The minimum diameter of mud tires should be 33-35 inches. The downside of this part is its high energy consumption, which will result in the need to install an additional battery. Hydraulic ones are more reliable and have more power. However, they are slower, cannot be used when the engine is not running, and are more expensive than electric ones of similar power.

After completing the first three stages of tuning, the UAZ “Farmer” is ready to overcome real off-road conditions. Some drivers replace a gasoline engine with a diesel unit. However, this pleasure is expensive, and its contribution to increasing cross-country ability is questionable, since this operation does not provide an increase in maximum power.

The fourth stage is associated with increasing interior safety and body strength

. We are talking about installing a power body kit. First of all, a strong bumper is installed, which will save the car in a frontal impact. To protect against side collisions, power thresholds are installed. These same thresholds, if necessary, can be used as stops for the jack. Branch guards will protect your windshield from impacts from tree branches when driving through forested areas. It would also be a good idea to protect the fuel tank, engine compartment and axle housings.

The fifth stage is needed for those who plan to move through areas rich in water sources. It consists of sealing the units and installing a snorkel on the roof

. Even when driving at a very shallow depth, water can get under the hood as a result of a very tiny wave. Besides, you never know what kind of hole you will encounter at the smallest ford. To increase electrical safety, all electrical equipment (batteries, ignition coil, generator, audio equipment, radio station, etc.) should be placed as high as possible and high-quality insulated wires should be used.

Stage six - installing disc brakes
