General information, purpose and design features
Before us is the top-end walk-behind tractor from the Hukskvarna company. As befits equipment of this level, the walk-behind tractor has the highest performance, comparable to premium models. The machine is widely in demand for processing garden plots, is in demand among farmers and summer residents, and is also quite popular in the public utilities sector.
Among the main areas of activity for which the model in question is designed, it is worth noting the cultivation and hilling of soil, planting and digging up crops, transportation of various cargoes and other work. Moreover, for each task it is necessary to have certain attachments. However, the equipment supports all kinds of attachment options, and in this regard it is universal. Husqvarna TF 338 is equipped with a belt clutch
Let's consider the key advantages of the walk-behind tractor:
- The model is equipped with various power plants from well-known manufacturers. In our case, the car is equipped with an original Husqvarna Engine, which supports 92 gasoline.
- The walk-behind tractor is rich in various functions designed to facilitate ease of use. For example, all modifications provide reverse gear, which eliminates the risk of getting stuck off-road. In addition, the reverse stroke improves maneuverability.
- The equipment is equipped with an adjustable handle, which can also be folded, which is very convenient for transportation and storage. The handle is adjustable in height and horizontally. Thus, the presence of a height adjustment reduces the load on the spine and arms, and thereby increases labor productivity. Thus, the operator is less tired and is able to work longer hours
- The walk-behind tractor is equipped with a maintenance-free gearbox. It has a special lubrication technology that will last for the entire period of operation
- The basic configuration includes protective side elements that prevent damage to plants during soil treatment.
- Large pneumatic wheels provide good maneuverability. The deep tread pattern and large diameter of the wheels allow you to safely work on difficult terrain, as well as in wet and muddy ground. The wheels are almost never clogged with dirt thanks to the special tread pattern
- The available carrying handle to some extent simplifies the transportation of equipment over short distances
- The machine is powered by a reliable 4-stroke gasoline engine of its own production, Husqvarna Engine. In terms of strength, this power plant is in no way inferior to American and Japanese engines with which the walk-behind tractor is equipped in other modifications. In addition, the motor is considered quite economical, and the cost of spare parts for it is at an acceptable level.
- The cultivator does not have an electronic system, so the device must be started manually. The manufacturer believed that less electronics would make the equipment more reliable and less capricious. In addition, manual starting eliminates the problems associated with starting in cold and slushy climates. We also note that the walk-behind tractor engine has an overhead valve design, and the crankshaft is located horizontally. This arrangement is considered the most successful and reliable, and better saves internal space, and thereby minimizes the contact of parts.
- The walk-behind tractor has a belt clutch, the reliability of which has been proven over the years. The clutch drive is reliably protected by a sealed coating that prevents the penetration of dust, dirt and other external influences. We also especially note the importance of the chain gearbox, which allows you to move both forward and backward.
- The basic package includes only two cutters. If necessary, you can install up to six cutters in total.
Advantages and disadvantages
Swedish agricultural equipment, according to owner reviews, is distinguished by a number of high performance characteristics. In addition, in comparison with other European equipment on the market, the equipment is sold at an acceptable cost. However, for the most complete picture of such units, it is worth considering all the positive and negative features of the Husqvarna motor cultivator models.
Among the positive characteristics it is worth highlighting the following.
The range of units is presented in a wide variety of devices of varying power and modification, in light of which any consumer will be able to choose equipment that will satisfy his individual needs in terms of solving agricultural problems.
- Thanks to the installation of powerful and productive Robin-Subaru, Husqvarna or Briggs&Stratton engines on walk-behind tractors, the equipment stands out for its durability and minimal risk of breakdowns even during long-term operation.
- Husqvarna cultivators can be equipped with a reverse function. This feature of the model range eliminates situations where agricultural machinery gets stuck in the ground even when working with wet soil.
- The manufacturer has taken care of the ease of use of its units, so most modern models have an ergonomic telescopic removable control handle, which can be removed if necessary. This feature is relevant for transporting and storing cultivators.
- All machines are produced with a gearbox that does not require additional maintenance.
- To protect the operator during soil cultivation tasks, many models additionally have shields on their body that can protect against flying clods of dirt. In addition, they will protect crops from damage by the device.
- The Husqvarna motor-cultivator has small wheels on its body that allow you to transport equipment. There are also units with a carrying handle.
- The configuration of the Swedish technology involves manual starting of the engine, making the device quite easy to get into working condition.
- This technique is distinguished by its high-quality belt clutch. This unit has a long service life and rarely fails. In addition, the mechanism is reliably hidden from the penetration of various types of contaminants from the outside. Due to chain gearboxes, the units are able to move not only forward, but also backward.
- In the basic configuration, motor cultivators contain several cutters; as a rule, a set consists of 2, 4 or 6 parts. In action, these elements can rotate in the direction of movement of the machine or against it.
But the technology is not without its drawbacks.
- Since high-performance machines are distinguished by their power, they also stand out for their impressive dimensions, which significantly limits the circle of people who can operate the units.
- Devices with a chain drive require special conditions of use, since any hard object falling into the cutter can cause damage to the entire chain.
Disadvantages of a walk-behind tractor
- The TF 338 model has a substantial size and heavy weight, which negatively affects maneuverability. In addition, it must be admitted that it will be easiest for physically trained people to operate such a walk-behind tractor.
- There are still modifications offered on the market that do not have a worm gear. This significantly reduces the functionality of the walk-behind tractor. For example, this version is not capable of reversing
- A walk-behind tractor equipped with a chain drive should be used with extreme caution. The fact is that a stone or other foreign object may get into the cutter. This can cause damage to the circuit, even to the point of failure.
Attachments
Let's note the most common options that are most often purchased for this walk-behind tractor:
- Plow
- Hiller
- Seeder
- Mower (rotary or friction)
- Potato digger/potato planter
- Ground hook
- Additional cutters
- Trailer
- Adapter with seat
- Water pump
As you can see, the walk-behind tractor has almost unlimited potential, which can be assessed using attachments. Or, on the contrary, their absence makes the technique practically meaningless.
First use and running-in
Before subjecting the device to full load, it must be run in. Running in is a standard procedure for any walk-behind tractor. It is carried out in several stages described in the user manual. Let's consider the main ones:
- Checking all important components and assemblies, refilling with oil and fuel if necessary. The walk-behind tractor must be in excellent technical condition before the first start
- Start the engine at idle speed. Let it run for 30-40 minutes, after which you can start using it with a gentle load.
- During running-in, various soil cultivation activities are allowed. For example, this could be cultivation, plowing the soil, mowing grass and other thickets, clearing areas of snow, leaves and crop residues. The main thing to remember here is that running in is not intended to evaluate the maximum performance of the device. The main thing here is to give the details the opportunity to break in and adapt to local conditions. The maximum load on the walk-behind tractor is no more than 50% of the maximum norm.
- Run-in can be completed in 10-15 hours. After this procedure, it is necessary to carry out a second technical inspection, as well as add oil and fuel.
Features of operation
Like any equipment, Varma walk-behind tractors require systematic maintenance, which is basically similar to the activities performed by owners of walk-behind tractors of other brands.
Before operating the unit, the owner must carefully read the operating instructions for the Varma walk-behind tractor with the manufacturer’s recommendations for technical care, safety rules, possible malfunctions and methods for eliminating them.
Daily maintenance of machines consists of checking the amount of fuel and oil, the presence of leaks, and testing the reliability of moving joints in the structure. Varma gasoline walk-behind tractors consume AI-92 gasoline, while diesel units consume high-quality diesel fuel. The oil used is usually SAE 10W30 class.
Run-in
For Varma walk-behind tractors, the running-in procedure is mandatory; it allows the units and mechanisms of the unit to break in and calibrate the optimal working gap between parts. Proper running-in extends the service life of the equipment many times over.
Run-in is carried out in stages. First, make sure that the required amount of fuel and oil is available, start the engine and leave it to idle for several minutes. Next, the running-in is performed in the following mode: 20 minutes at idle/quick throttling for 4 hours. During this period, you should test the gear shift, the functionality of the control levers and other settings.
At the next stage, wheels are mounted on the unit and the Varma walk-behind tractor is operated in a gentle mode - no more than half the maximum power for 3-4 hours. Upon completion of the break-in, the old oil is replaced with fresh oil.
Possible malfunctions, repairs
Varma walk-behind tractors are characterized by their owners as reliable equipment, which is not characterized by systemic malfunctions or serious breakdowns. Malfunctions that arise are often associated with operational errors and can be corrected independently.
- If the engine does not start, check the integrity of the fuel system, to ensure that the fuel does not freeze, the injector becomes clogged, or water gets into the tank.
- If the Varma walk-behind tractor engine does not gain power, it is necessary to check the cleanliness of the air filter and the correct fuel supply.
- Violation of oil pressure or its absence and leakage, as well as air pockets cause defects in the lubrication system of the Varma walk-behind tractor.

Red-haired beauty - Husqvarna TF 338 walk-behind tractor
Last spring, going out into my garden and assessing the scope of work, sadly saying goodbye to the weekend and already instinctively rubbing my back, I quickly came to the idea that in my situation, when the garden is my hobby, and the harvest is not a way of subsistence, but only a trophy , it’s worth considering options to make your work easier in every possible way, without worrying too much about payback. The first thought was exactly this - you’ll have to spend money and the toad will not give you peace, but you’ll be fooled with it. Of course, the most obvious “facilitator” of my work would be a cultivator or walk-behind tractor, and its price would make my potatoes “golden” for a long time, but the reality turned out to be not so sad, however, everything in order.
Before this, I had little understanding of the prices and varieties of this type of equipment. I had experience with snow blowers, and from there I took away the idea that convenience and reliability cost money. Also, I was clearly aware of the dependence of price on the power of the device, which depends on the type and volume of the surface being treated. My 4 acres are sand, which, even after 8 years of fertilizers, manure and peat, is quite easy to process, but next to my parents’ plot, it is lower, with heavier and wetter soil and areas that are abundantly overgrown with grass. With these introductory notes, I headed to specialized forums. It was there that my eyes were opened to the fact that a walk-behind tractor not only mills (digs) the soil, but it can also be used to make furrows for planting, and in the future, it can be used to hill up and dig up crops. As a result, the cultivator was rejected due to the obvious advantages and versatility of the walk-behind tractor and the price difference, which was not very critical for me. It’s easier, we’re looking for a walk-behind tractor. And then, among the numerous “Salyuts”, “Champions”, “Patriots” and other variety, I accidentally noticed a not very popular topic on one of the forums about a red-haired beauty - Husqvarna TF 338. I admit, I fell under the spell of my favorite brand, and therefore this article is not about the wise choice of a walk-behind tractor, but about how I bought and tested this particular model and why I have not yet been disappointed in it.
Motoblock Husqvarna TF 338
Of course, I did a little research and surveyed forum regulars about this device. There were very few reviews about it. The uniqueness of the model was alarming, since Husqvarna no longer has any other walk-behind tractors, and this one is produced in small batches, as far as I know. It is produced in China, and the engine was developed by Husqvarna itself. It’s worth saying right away that I consider it a walk-behind tractor precisely because of the wheels included in the kit. I will not argue with those who do not see the difference between cultivators and walk-behind tractors and separate them, purely symbolically, by power or other characteristics that are important to them. In this case, it was important to me not what to call it, but how it could be used and how much it would cost me. And here a pleasant surprise awaited me - at the time of purchase, this model cost 37,000 rubles.
They brought me a box in a very shabby state. The seller admitted that it was a display sample and it was packaged as best they could. They did it poorly. All boxes were damaged after being transported by the transport company.
As a result, a scratch and abrasion around with a diameter of 2-3 centimeters was found on the side of the gas tank. But I decided not to attach any importance to this and started assembling. The photographs show the entire unpacking process and contents. I was surprised by the metal frame and how the components were laid out there. If it had come from the factory, or had been properly packaged by the seller, then I think there would have been no damage during transportation.
Having removed the cardboard and laid out the fallen boxes on the benches, I began to worry that not all the parts were given to me. In the end, there were a few extra ones, a few that were not included in the package at all, but the main thing was that what was needed was available.

Reviews Husqvarna TF 338
I am very pleased with the cultivator. gnaws virgin soil well, its weight helps. It walks very briskly over what has already been plowed, smashing everything to pieces.
It is very simple and convenient to work with, almost no jumping.
Works like a clock (three times ugh). opened, assembled. I filled it with oil and gasoline and started it with one push.
crazy torque. It doesn’t stall, even when it hits rocks, it grinds everything, thick roots and rotten sticks.
Plows calmly, half throttle.
build quality and all components.
And even the smell of the exhaust is somehow pleasant, not like the Briggs (Champion snow blower, very smelly)
- Weight, this is probably the heaviest - 93 kg, when the rest of the classmates weigh about 60. Under this weight, it bites perfectly even into compacted virgin clay.
— The processing width is 95 cm and the number of cutters, for other manufacturers and models it is much smaller, although the power and price are higher.
- Price. Full price-quality ratio. Although you understand that the price is due to the fact that the device is assembled in China.
— Availability of rubber wheels included.
— Native proven Husqvarna engine, the rest of the walk-behind tractors and cultivators are equipped with either Briggs or Subars. Time will tell how he will prove himself further.
User manual
The operating instructions are included with each walk-behind tractor and contain the following standards.
General standards
Before using the tool, familiarize yourself with its operating instructions and controls. When using the unit, the recommendations in this operating manual must be followed. The use of the unit by persons who have not read these instructions and by children is strictly not recommended. It is not recommended to carry out work while there are strangers within a radius of 20 meters from the device. The operator must keep control of the unit during all work. When working with hard types of soil, remain vigilant, as the walk-behind tractor has the least stability compared to already treated soils.
Preparing for work
Examine the area where you will be working and remove any visible objects that are not soil, as they may be thrown away by the working tool. Before using the unit, each time it is worth inspecting the equipment for damage or tool wear. If worn or damaged parts are found, replace them. Inspect the device for fuel or oil leaks. It is not recommended to use the device without casings or protective elements. Check the tightness of the connecting elements.
Operating the device
To start the engine, follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure that your feet are at a safe distance from the cutters. Stop the engine when the equipment is not in use. Maintain concentration while the unit moves towards you or when changing the direction of rotation. Be careful - the engine and exhaust system become very hot during operation and there is a risk of burns if touched.
In case of suspicious vibration, blockage, difficulties with engaging and disengaging the clutch, collision with a foreign object, or wear of the engine stop cable, it is recommended to stop the engine immediately. Wait until the engine has cooled, disconnect the spark plug wire, inspect the unit and contact a Husqvarna workshop to carry out the necessary repair work. Use the device in daylight or good artificial light.
Maintenance and storage
Stop the engine before cleaning, inspecting, adjusting or servicing equipment or replacing tools. Before replacing accessories, turn off the engine and wear heavy-duty gloves. To ensure safety when using the device, ensure that all bolts and nuts are tightened. To reduce the risk of fire, keep the engine, muffler, and fuel storage area clear of plants, waste oil, and other flammable materials. Allow the engine to cool before storing the unit. When the engine is difficult to start or does not start at all, one of the following problems is possible:
- oxidation of contacts;
- violation of wire insulation;
- water getting into fuel or oil;
- clogged carburetor jets;
- low oil level;
- low fuel quality;
- malfunction of the ignition system (weak spark from the spark plug, dirt on the spark plugs, low compression ratio in the cylinder);
- contamination of the exhaust system with combustion products.
Daily check:
- loosening, breaking of nuts and bolts;
- cleanliness of the air filter (if it is dirty, clean it);
- oil level;
- no oil or gasoline leaks;
- good quality fuel;
- cleanliness of the instrument;
- no unusual vibration or excessive noise.
Change the engine and gearbox oil once a month. Once every three months, clean the air filter. Once every 6 months - clean the fuel filter, change the engine and gearbox oil, clean the spark plug, clean the spark plug cap. Once a year - change the air filter, check the valve clearance, replace the spark plug, clean the fuel filter, clean the combustion chamber, check the fuel circuit.

This will help you choose the right unit.

Model range of Husqvarna walk-behind tractors
The Swedish company Husqvarna has been on the agricultural machinery market for more than forty years. Recently, the brand has entered the list of leaders in motor cultivators. This is due, first of all, to the quality of the products, as well as to the latest technologies that are used to create models.
Due to the power of the units, it is possible to use various additional equipment. Attachments from the manufacturer can also be found on the market. An example is a cart for a walk-behind tractor, which is slightly smaller in size than a tractor and has greater maneuverability.
The entire range of equipment is divided into series, which have their own distinctive features. It is worth considering that walk-behind tractors require good service, since special systems were used to create the design.
Cultivator Husqvarna 230
The peculiarity of the Husqvarna walk-behind tractor is its high operating power in a small size. It is suitable for cultivating small areas, and for ease of movement it is equipped with an additional transport wheel.
Unit characteristics:
- Husqvarna petrol engine;
- chain mechanical transmission;
- a protective bumper that protects the engine and can be used as a carrying handle;
- large wheels for easy maneuvering;
- adjustable handles.
Attachments
Attachments are standard on almost all models.
Important! The best option would be to use additional attachments from the manufacturer, since universal elements may require lengthy setup. If the universal equipment is not configured, the work process will have shortcomings. Belts and various parts will also wear out.
List of standard equipment:
- hiller, used to create furrows used for planting;
- a potato digger is used for harvesting;
- with the help of a plow the land is plowed;
- lugs are used instead of wheels for better traction with the ground;
- adapters are used to create a mini tractor based on a walk-behind tractor;
- the soil is cultivated using milling cutters;
- mowers can be rotary and segment type. Segmental ones can also be used to clear areas of bushes;
- hitch and special extensions if necessary to connect additional equipment;
- snow removal equipment or a regular shovel blade;
- various trailers or carts;
- weights.
In fact, regardless of the model of the walk-behind tractor, you can connect any equipment to it, but you need to take into account the required power during operation. If the power of the walk-behind tractor is low, then the efficiency of the work process will be minimal.
