The history of the creation of the Barguzin car

The Gorky Automobile Plant launched the GAZ-2217 Sobol-Barguzin into mass production back in 1998. The released car had two modifications. They differed in wheel formula: 4x2 and 4x4.

In 1999, the dimensions of the GAZ-2217 were changed, namely: its height was reduced by 100 mm. In 2003 and 2010, the car underwent major changes. During the modernization, “Barguzin” was changed quite a lot and acquired a high degree of comfort.

The history of the appearance of GAZ-22171 “Sable”

The first Sobol class cars appeared at the Gorky Automobile Plant in 1998. They differed from ordinary “Gazelles” in the following parameters:

• Base shortened to 2,760 mm;
• Single rear tires;
• Independent front spring suspension;
• Load capacity reduced to 900 kg.

The GAZ-22171 car had a high roof and was produced in six-seat and ten-seat versions. In 1999, production of the Barguzin modification began, which received a lower roof. This modification was positioned by the manufacturer as a minivan, and had a lifting rear door.

The Sobol family of cars also includes all-wheel drive versions. They were purchased both by private individuals for travel and hunting, and by various organizations that, due to the specifics of their work, have to get to hard-to-reach places. All-wheel drive versions of GAZ have a rigid front axle and cardan joints in the front wheel drive.

In 2003, the Gorky Automobile Plant underwent a global modernization of the Gazelle family. This modernization also affected cars of the Sobol family. The following elements in the design of the cars have been changed:

• The shape of the bumpers has changed and has become more voluminous;
• A massive radiator grille appeared, which gave the car a more aggressive look;
• The old design headlights were replaced with new block headlights;
• There is a new dashboard and many other minor improvements.

At the beginning of 2010, new modifications called “Sobol-Business” appeared at the Gorky Automobile Plant. They are distinguished by the presence of many modified units and components in the design. Sobol-Business minibuses are still produced. The most popular engines in this family are the Cummins ISF 2.8 diesel engines equipped with a turbine. These motors have long proven themselves to be reliable and economical.

From 1998 to 2003, only two types of power units were installed on the GAZ-2217 car: a carburetor four-cylinder engine (unit volume - 2.5 liters and power - 100 hp) and an injection engine (four-cylinder, power - 110 horsepower).

In 2003, Sobol Barguzin began to be equipped with an injection power unit with a power of 140 hp. s, and a diesel engine produced by the Gorky plant. Starting from 2010, all GAZ-2217 cars began to be produced with an UMZ engine - A274 or Cummins ISF (volume - 2.8 l).

The gasoline unit has a volume of 2.69 liters and a cylinder diameter of 96.5 mm. This power plant has a power of 107 horsepower.

The diesel power plant has a cylinder diameter of 94 mm. The working volume of the unit is 2.8 liters. This unit has a power of 120 horsepower.

Chassis, chassis and transmission

The Sobol Barguzin car was created on the basis of a frame chassis. Rear-wheel drive models are equipped with independent spring-type front suspension. This allows the car to move smoothly, despite the poor quality of the road surface.

Stability of the car when cornering is achieved due to the installed transverse stabilizer. Thanks to ball joints installed instead of kingpins, driving the car is considered easy. The machine operator does not get tired even when traveling long distances. The rear suspension is leaf spring, with installed telescopic shock absorbers.

On GAZ-2217 of any modification, the manufacturer installs a manual gearbox. It has five forward and one reverse gears. All forward gears are equipped with synchronizers, which makes shifting soft and silent. The gearbox is mounted on the clutch housing, which, in turn, is mounted on the engine. The car is equipped with a dry-type single-plate clutch. The clutch drive is hydraulic.

The all-wheel drive GAZ-2217 is additionally equipped with a front axle and a transfer gearbox. This box has two gears: high and low.

The transfer case is controlled using a lever installed in the car's interior. Thanks to the center differential, the Barguzin has high off-road capability.

Dimensions of the car interior – 2500x1800x1330 mm (length x width x height). New generation models have a passage from the passenger compartment to the driver's seat; older versions do not have such a passage; a partition is installed instead. The salon is equipped with 5 or 9 soft seats with folding armrests. Next to the driver's seat in the Barguzin there is a single comfortable seat. The rear seats can be easily folded down to create a full-fledged place to relax.
