As they say, until you ride it yourself, you won’t understand anything. I can’t express in words how much I’ve read on forums about the UAZ Patriot. The reality turned out to be, let's say, different. However, the impressions are subjective, and I can only compare them with the Nissan Patrol Y61, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, TLC 70 TP2, which I drove a lot in my time.
So, impressions of the UAZ, 6000 km in the city, highway and mountain roads of the Southern Urals. The first thing I want to say is that the constant comparison on the Internet of the Patriot with the Nissan Patrol and TLC 105 is completely wrong. These cars are imposing luxury transporters from point A to point B. Featherweight, low-slung in soft seats, long wheelbase, quiet, expensive finishes, etc. As soon as I got into the UAZ Patriot, I immediately realized that this is the TLC 70. Tall, nimble car , short hood, with a huge trunk. In terms of finishing and behavior on the roads, it is the same bucket as the TLC 70. Perhaps because I adored my TLC 70 and felt almost no emotions towards the Patrol, I literally fell in love with the Patriot.
Lighter than the Patrol by almost 300 kg! A light, short car, the Patrol, in comparison with the Patriot, is just a suitcase, a clumsy crocodile. At the same time, all this never to the detriment of the internal volume, more on this later in a separate post. High landing. I sit above the TLC 200, well above the standard Patrol. The seating position is correct, upright, not car-like, all the dimensions are perfectly felt, I sit high and can look far away. It's just a blast. Having read a lot on the Internet, I expected that Patriot was hellishly noisy. In practice, it turned out that the car is quite quiet, you can talk calmly at high speeds - this greatly surprised and pleased me. Which I now readily believe, because I can compare it with my Citroen C3 and Nissan Juke - if they are not noisier, they are certainly not quieter. Naturally a break in the template. But there is no need to have any illusions - the car handles significantly worse in the city and on the highway than the Patrol, TLC 105. It's wobbly, wobbling, and the steering wheel is very tight. And even more so, it handles much worse than the LR Discovery 4, which we drove to the Pamirs. However, here you have to look at the price tag; it’s ridiculous to demand from a car the same behavior as analogues that are twice or three times more expensive in price. Handling is again at the level of TLC 70 or LR Defender. The same goes for the brakes. The same applies to behavior on the highway, here the engine is clearly not enough - the Patriot does not accelerate, does not go uphill, overtaking is difficult. But fortunately, this has never bothered me; I like to drive calmly and measuredly. But dear mother, the way she drives off-road, over rocks and mud, is pure pleasure. Atmospheric, non-turbocharged, perfectly tuned engine that literally pulls from idle. The patrol with the ZD30 does not move at all until the turbine spins up, this is incredibly infuriating. And what a drop on the new boxes! 2.6 is purely a tank in comparison with the lowered Patrol 1.9 Off-road is definitely the Patriot’s element, here it outruns the Patrol and co, and again is at the TLC 70 level. And, no matter how it sounds, I like the manufacturer’s approach to this car . Do you know how many pages are in the UAZ Patriot operating manual? 200. This is not a poor color book for the “consumer”, this is a full-fledged manual with drawings for those who love and know how a car works, who are not alien to the engineering approach. Does it break? Yes. Unreliable? Yes. But the device is simple and understandable, almost everything is subject to field repair. You open the hood and everything is clear and accessible, I definitely like that. It was scary to approach the Patrol. Here, of course, I would write separately “Why I bought a UAZ Patriot,” but another time. In general, the Patrol is an expensive behemoth, covered inside with plastic. The Patriot, like the TLC 70, is an uncompromising iron car that I need for very specific purposes, for quiet, short trips with my family to remote places. I bought the Patriot without emotion as a practical, cheap, utilitarian SUV, but having driven it, the car now naturally excites the blood, which I never expected from it.
