The Tveks EK-12 excavator is available in the following modifications:
- classic version with a monoblock boom and a 0.65 cubic meter bucket;
- “EK-12-10” - version supplemented with a Bosch-Rexroth hydraulic pump and a travel hydraulic motor;
- “EK-12-20” - a variant characterized by a smaller bucket (0.5 cubic meters), PSM hydraulics, a blade support, stabilizers and variable boom geometry;
- “EK-12-24” is a modified analogue of the “EK-12-20” version with a Bosch-Rexroth hydraulic pump and a travel hydraulic motor;
- "EK-12-40" - version with a 0.65 cubic meter bucket, travel hydraulic motor, Bosch-Rexroth hydraulic pump and an imported diesel engine).
Modern EK-12 excavators have the following advanced technological capabilities:

Engines of the EK-12 excavator
Excavators "EK-12" are equipped with a 4-stroke, 4-cylinder diesel power unit MMZ "D-243", as on the Belarus MTZ-80 tractor. The EK-12-40 modification is equipped with an imported Perkins 1104C-44 engine. In the engine compartment, the pump is located on the right, and the radiators are on the left. The muffler is located above the pump unit and creates an additional thermal load. Air filters are located in front of the radiators. Some excavators are equipped with a Hydronic-10 starting heater, which makes it easier to start the engine in cold weather.
The main technical parameters of the D-243 diesel engine are as follows: displacement – 4.75 l; power –59.6 kW, or 81 hp; maximum torque – 258 N.m; cylinder diameter – 110 mm. Maximum torque is achieved at 1600 rpm. The nominal rotation of the crankshaft is 2200 rpm.
The fuel consumption of the EK-12 excavator, determined by the manufacturer, is 229 g/kW per hour. The fuel tank capacity is 255 liters.
The EK-12-40 modification (currently not produced) was equipped with a Perkins 1104C-44 power unit. This is a diesel engine similar in its characteristics to the D-243. Its working volume is 4.4 l; power - 64 kW, or 85.8 hp; torque is 308 N.m.

Features of the EK-12 device. Excavator pneumatic and hydraulic systems
One of the main features of the EK-12 device is its pneumatic system. It ensures the operation of drum brakes and a permanently closed parking brake, turning the front axle on and off and shifting gears of a 2-speed gearbox. The excavator's pneumatic system operates from a standard engine compressor, using sensors, valves and receivers located on the turntable.
The hydraulic system of the EK-12 excavator operates with attachments. Excavator hydraulics ensure smooth movements of working equipment and increase the efficiency of work. Bosch-Rexroth hydraulics work most accurately and efficiently - a distributor, motors, pump and control unit of this brand are installed on Twex EK-12 excavators. All hydraulic lines and cylinders are reliably protected in the body of the handle, and their damage during operation is excluded.
A distinctive feature of the EK-12 excavator is also the ability to change the geometry of the boom.
Complete set and working equipment
The main working equipment of excavators of this model are various buckets (backhoes) with a volume of 0.35 to 0.65 m3. They change from standard to specialized as needed. For example, when you need to process difficult soils or dig narrowed trenches. In addition to buckets, the excavator can work with a ripper (when removing asphalt concrete pavement, frozen soil layers, dismantling curb parts.
Similar tasks are performed by a hydraulic hammer - another element of the working equipment of the EK-12 excavator. It is used in work with concrete and reinforced concrete surfaces, with massive walls made of bricks; when diving into heavily frozen soil and when compacting a layer of loose soil. MG-300 hydraulic hammers are designed for excavators with a monoblock boom; for other modifications - “MG-150”.
The EK-12 excavator also works with a grab. When the GK-221 grab device is installed on it, it is also possible to install a hydraulic all-wheel drive rotator. The scale of cargo coverage is increased with the help of an extension device made of inserts and a guide.

Cabin of EK series excavators
installs a unified cabin with decent equipment and modern design on all its vehicles. The operator's seat is equipped with adjustments in several directions, and the operator can adjust the steering column to tilt. The cab windshield is raised under the roof, and there is a hatch in the roof. It is not difficult to climb into the cabin of the EK-12 excavator, since the convenient steps are located low from the ground, and there are additional handrails.
Since the excavator is equipped with a hydraulic drive, operating this heavy machine does not require serious physical effort. The steering wheel turns easily, the working equipment can be controlled using joysticks with a servo drive. Compared to imported equipment, the cabin of the EK-12 excavator contains a minimal amount of electronics, there is no on-board computer, which complicates the device and increases the cost of the equipment.
The cabin is equipped with a Zenit-8000 heater, powered by the engine cooling system. The heater is located under the operator's seat. Air circulates directly through the radiator grille, without diffusers or air ducts. It is possible to install an air conditioner in the excavator cabin as an additional option.

The electronic panel is designed to display the operating parameters of the engine, electrical equipment and hydraulic system of the excavator and to provide warning light and sound alarms about unacceptable deviations of the controlled parameters.
The display shows digital values of the controlled operating parameters. ATTENTION! When the “ground” is turned on on the electronic instrument panel display
EPP-4 in windows 1 and 2 (Fig. 5) for 10 s the number of engine hours (hours of operation) will be displayed with an accuracy of 0.1 hours. After 10 s, readings of voltage in the network and temperature in the hydraulic system will appear in windows 1 and 2 .
On the display unit, operating parameters are controlled using color indicators. The green color of the indicator indicates normal, corresponding to the specified parameter. Red - about an unacceptable deviation (exceeding or decreasing below the permissible) operating parameter of the engine or excavator system.
The lighting of the warning lamps indicates that the systems depicted on them are switched on or are malfunctioning.

Excavator EK-12
EK-12 TVEX is a pneumatic wheeled hydraulic excavator, the main purpose of which is the development of pits, quarries, trenches and wells in soils of categories I-IV, used for unloading and loading bulk materials, frozen soils and loosened rocks. This is the youngest model among the EK series excavators (EK-14, EK-18). The model is produced at the Tver Excavator Plant. It has proven itself in many sectors of public utilities, road transport and industrial services.
Thanks to a significant (up to 2000 mm) reduction in the rotating platform, the excavator is perfectly suited for working in cramped conditions. The well-thought-out geometry of the boom allows you to dig deep and narrow pits and wells, which is an insurmountable obstacle for most other models. When driving in city traffic, the excavator, due to its design, does not take up much space (comparable to a small truck), which allows you to get to the work site in a short time without any problems. The maximum travel speed is 22.5 km/h. The controls are simple and intuitive.
An important factor is the level of comfort for the worker performing the work. Indeed, in any industry, the productivity and quality of work directly depends on how convenient the workplace is. The EK-12 model has made a number of improvements in this direction:

The boom is designed in such a way that soil development is not costly, and if you change the geometry of the boom, you can dig a trench or well with precision (but here, of course, the professionalism of the machine operator also influences), the working cycle duration is 16-20 seconds (accumulated) unloaded). The excavator's cabin also deserves praise: small, but very comfortable, nothing superfluous. Very good visibility, comfort (especially in comparison with the “birdhouses” of the EO-3322 or EO-3323 excavators).

It is better not to develop these soils of the fourth category with an excavator, since its powerful hydraulics can break the boom. An employee of one enterprise spoke about such a breakdown. The arrow had to be boiled, after which a large load becomes generally contraindicated for it. Also, you shouldn’t drive your excavator around the city (unless it’s very close): after all, it’s not a vehicle, but an earth-moving machine, and it’s best to transport it on a rigid coupling.
There are many reviews from those who came across low-quality equipment of the EK-12 model. The excavator itself is good, but its reliability does not evoke positive emotions. Often something goes wrong. Several owners had oil pumps at once. There are problems with the steering. When driving in the transport position, the higher gear is either engaged or not. The grease caps on the bottom are located in such a way that if you sit down somewhere, they will certainly be torn off and you won’t be able to unscrew them. Then drill and cut. Bushings and pins on the bucket and boom break prematurely.
Another drawback that several reviewers pointed out about the EK-12 is its small radiator. If you give a heavy load and dig for a long time, it will quickly boil, because the machine, due to its specific nature, basically stands still. This problem can be solved by installing a larger radiator. Instead of the standard cooling motor, one of the owners installed an electric fan from Sobol.
There are no complaints about the D-243 engine, but there are some misunderstandings with the Perkins engine on the EK-12-40 modification. For example: “Either there was a problem with the engine, or with the electronics, but it constantly showed and signaled either that the oil pressure in the engine was exceeding, or that the pressure had completely dropped to zero. At the same time, the engine ran smoothly”; “During operations with the boom, arm and bucket, when the pressure reaches 27 MPa, the motor immediately stalls. That is, if you hold the joystick point-blank, the engine should maintain pressure while working with the load, but this does not happen. I haven't figured out what the reason is yet. When I press the supports all the way, the engine runs (pressure – 26 MPa).”
Both in terms of performance and versatility of use, everyone speaks very positively about the EK-12. In terms of diesel fuel consumption it is also very good (economical).
