The HTZ-17221 tractor is a direct successor to the Soviet model T-150K from the Kharkov Tractor Plant. Based on the modernized technology, a series of machines was created designed to perform work requiring high traction, maneuverability, and unpretentiousness to the conditions of daily operation. From its predecessor, it retained the movable articulated frame, high ground clearance and good maintainability, so valuable during round-the-clock harvesting.

Engine
All modifications of the KhTZ-17221 use the Russian-made YaMZ-238 engine. Tractor resources on the World Wide Web often contain advice on modifying or switching to other models from foreign manufacturers, but this is strictly not recommended.
The basic unit delivered from the factory has a V-shaped arrangement of 8 cylinders. It is also installed on the K-700 series, military equipment and a number of excavators. These are classic fuel injection pumps with distributed injection. Each cylinder has its own pump section and a pair of valves (according to Western classification this is called OHV). The rod pushers are based on rollers, which significantly increase the service life of the engine. The connecting rod mounting journals on the crankshaft are located at right angles. This solution resulted in uniform flashes and no uncontrolled detonation. The pistons are made of aluminum alloy, but to increase reliability, 3 compression rings are installed under them.
Also, tractors of this type come off the assembly line with a YaMZ-236 engine, which has 6 cylinders and, accordingly, has a lower torque. The resource guaranteed by the manufacturer for each model is equivalent to 800,000 km on public roads. The timing of major repairs depends on operating conditions and fuel quality.
General Main Characteristics
The tractor has the following characteristics:
- Power. It directly depends on the used internal combustion engine. For YaMZ-236 this is 150-300 hp, and for YaMZ-238 235-420 hp. Indicators may vary depending on operating conditions and the overall quality of the fuel used. This is also affected by the technical condition, and in initial modes even by the ambient temperature.
- Dimensions. The length with rear linkage is 6.13, height 3.4, and width 2.46 m. Wheelbase 2.86 m, ground clearance 0.4, and turning radius 6.7 m.
- Fuel consumption. For YaMZ-236 and 238 it is 224 and 251 grams of fuel to produce 1 kW of energy per hour. These are averages that vary depending on the load.
- Transmission. To switch, only a hydraulic drive is used; a person does not have enough hand force to switch the lever. Switching on the go is allowed. A total of 12 forward and 6 reverse speeds are provided on the basic modification of the tractor. These figures can also vary greatly depending on the engine used. The main gear converges onto a cone with complex spiral teeth that provide optimal traction. The cross-wheel differential is implemented using a simple planetary mechanism with one stage.

- Chassis. The tractor control is completely based on hydraulics, and it is separated from the functional system that powers the unit. Rotation is possible due to the mutual movement of two half frames. By default, both axles are driven and their design is completely identical. The only exceptions are the location of the base gear and the difference between the sizes of the axle shafts. Differential locking occurs only in automatic mode. If the front axle is movable, then the rear axle is rigidly fixed. The springs are supported by additional shock absorbers. The wheels have the same diameter. Only pneumatic tires are used. The cabin has its own shock absorption system.
- Hydraulic system. It allows you to use and control trailed equipment. The connection is made under the rear fender on either side. The hoses are connected using special couplings. Transfer of control is completely possible from the cab. There are also possibilities for automatic control of the hitch. Automation allows you to correct tractor driver mistakes and significantly save fuel.
- Frame and power plant. It was inherited from the T-150K. Its design consists of a pair of semi-frames connected using power hinges. They maintain the position of tractor parts in two planes at once, which avoids overturning. The power plant is located on the front half frame. To prevent the entry of dirt and dust, it is covered with a hood. Special panels provide quick access for adjustments in the field. The clutch is also protected by a casing and operates on the friction principle. There is only one driven disk, but it is reinforced to resist loads. The clutch is tightened using pneumatics until the functional parts are mated.
Cabin
This part is very different from the uncomfortable models of previous tractors. Double-glazed windows were installed, making it easy to maintain the temperature inside during severe frosts. Inside there is an air conditioner and a stove, allowing you to work comfortably in any weather. The controls are located so that the operator does not waste time gaining access.

The racks are reinforced, which protects the tractor driver in case of a possible rollover. The cabin also has an increased glass area, which significantly increases the viewing angle. An ergonomic soft chair will prevent you from getting tired from shaking during a long working day.

Leading engineers of the enterprise reviewed all outdated components and assemblies, but it is worth noting that extremely durable structural elements, proven over the years, remained unchanged. Fuel consumption was reduced by 16%, while productivity increased by 1/5. This applies to both maximum power and performance.
The main problem of the T-150K was the inability to integrate with modern equipment, which was corrected. The basic advantage is unpretentiousness to operating conditions and high maintainability. An experienced mechanic will be able to return the HTZ-17221 to service very quickly if spare parts are available. The movable frame significantly reduces the load and increases maneuverability.
Tractor drivers consider the cabin, which requires improvement, to be the main drawback. To make it really warm, you need to lay an additional layer of insulation under the skin. The peculiarity of the line is its increased load capacity. For this purpose, the HTZ 17221 tractor is equipped with a two-cylinder device for aggregation with mounted and trailed equipment with a total weight of up to 20 tons.
The device is based on the T-150K frame. This is not a solid unit, but two half-frames united together by a hinge joint, which ultimately makes it possible to change the angle of inclination in both planes - vertical and horizontal.
In the basic configuration, the device has a YaMZ-236 diesel engine with a rotation speed of 2100 rpm and a power of 175 hp, which allows the device to be classified as traction class 3.
