Part 1 Part 2
We did not dare to publish this material on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Kama Automobile Plant. The events that unfolded at the end of 1988 were timed to coincide with a completely different anniversary occasion - the production of the millionth KamAZ truck and resonate with the festive façade of the anniversary.
The memories of the former head of the artistic design bureau of UGK KamAZ Sergei Varlamovich Ekimov about the creation of his own cabin at the Kama auto giant can hardly be called festive. They are replete with facts from the daily routine of plant designers and not always pleasant ones. The story told by one of the participants in this titanic but underrated work seemed very informative to us.
On the Vesti KAMAZ website, readers are sometimes presented with clever riddles. Some time ago some interesting photos were posted there. Many responded that they depicted an experienced KamAZ truck with a DAF cab. This is the wrong answer! The correct one deserves to be counted among the achievements of Soviet science and technology.
Engines
The in-line sixes Mercedes-Benz OM457 LA with a volume of 11.97 liters, which are now installed on KAMAZ-5490 truck tractors, are reliable engines with a declared service life of 1 million km. They are assembled in Mannheim, Germany, at the Daimler AG engine plant. They are very economical, the service mileage reaches 80 thousand km. One of the disadvantages of this originally bus engine is that there is no power take-off to drive auxiliary gearboxes or hydraulic pumps. If you need to haul a dump semi-trailer or use any other equipment, you will have to equip the PTO gearbox (power take-off).
OM457 provides the road train with fuel consumption of 32–35 liters per 100 km

They planned to equip KAMAZ-5490 with the new promising G8 KAMAZ-750. This engine has a new block and common cast iron heads for each bank of cylinders. It also has a completely different dimension: the piston stroke was planned to be increased to 135 mm (and possibly up to 140 mm!), with a constant diameter of 120 mm (although it could have been increased by 5–10 mm), the working volume was about 13 liters. Power – up to 550 l. With. at 1900 rpm, torque over 2000 N.m at 1200–1400 rpm.
Experimental KAMAZ-750 engines were shown to us at the Scientific and Technical Center; the engines have already passed bench and road tests. But the use of Mercedes-Benz components on the KAMAZ-5490 still turned out to be optimal - with this machine, the Kama Automobile Plant rightly occupied its niche in the Russian market of tractors for interregional transportation.

Main bridge
Another predictable and justified design solution is the use of a completely “Mercedes” drive axle, the Daimler HL6 model, which is installed on the Axor and Actros. This is 100% imported from Germany. The axle has a single 3.077 hypoid gearbox with a differential lock. Disc brake mechanisms.

Cabin
They could very well make their own mainline tractor in Chelny on their own. Under the same index 5490, work was underway on a completely different car: with a cabin developed on the instructions of KAMAZ OJSC by the South Korean engineering company DMEC, part of Kia Motors, which, in turn, has been owned by Hyundai Corporation since the late 90s. And Hyundai Motor is seriously cooperating with Daimler. Prototypes of the entire family of these cabins were already ready: wide and narrow, with a sleeping bag and daytime, short ones. The cabins turned out to be very good, but the interior was not clear. Now the Mercedes-Benz Axor cab is installed on the KAMAZ-5490.

Versatility in use
KamAZ trucks have different technical characteristics and appearance. The range offers a sufficient number of machines. It is worth noting that there are 10 completely different vehicles only among the onboard modifications, but there are slightly more models with a dump body - 11 types.
Their chassis is of a universal type - it can be installed on many different machines. It will be cheaper to purchase a separate base for the car and all the necessary components. The modification can easily be assembled at an enterprise, because, as a rule, legal entities of similar specificity have many good mechanics under their command. That is why KamAZ vehicles are considered universal. Among them you can always choose the one that really suits you.
KAMAZ-65117 936010 78 (N3) - a little about markings, manipulators and brakes
July 17, 2014
One of the most popular trucks of KAMAZ OJSC among on-board vehicles is KAMAZ-65117. And this is no coincidence. This model has been produced since 2006. It took into account the requirements of new standards and the wishes of drivers as much as possible: high performance properties of the vehicle, a comfortable cabin, a competitive price, a European platform, etc. The truck can be equipped in accordance with the wishes of the customer. KAMAZ-65117 is the base for many truck models, including the KAMAZ-65117 936010 78(N3) model.
KAMAZ-65117 936010 78 (N3) is an onboard tractor with a manipulator crane from INMAN (IM-150). According to existing standards in force in the Russian Federation, the numbers in the designation of a truck mean the following. In accordance with current standards, each vehicle has a letter designation of the manufacturer (in this case KAMAZ) and a specific digital code, which includes from four to six digits. The decoding of this code always begins with the second digit, indicating the type of vehicle (in this case, “5” - therefore, the truck was developed on the basis of a dump truck chassis). The first digit in the designation shows that this is a truck - the number “6” and, therefore, the truck is further classified by gross weight (gross weight is the weight of the vehicle including cargo, driver and passengers, set by the manufacturer).
KAMAZ-65117 936010 78(N3) belongs to the class of vehicles with a gross weight from 21 to 40 tons (number “6”) - according to the technical characteristics of the vehicle, the gross weight of the truck is 24 tons. The next two digits in the index indicate the model number, and the fifth digit indicates that this model is a modification and not a base model. The following numbers, as a rule, are not applied to the vehicle cabin, since they indicate the configuration of the truck in accordance with the manufacturer’s documentation. The truck designation also contains an international designation according to the UNECE - N3, indicating that this vehicle is intended for the transportation of goods and belongs to the category of trucks with a gross weight of more than 12 tons.
INTERESTING FACT
CJSC INMAN (Ishimbay oil manipulators) is the largest enterprise engaged in the production of manipulator cranes, as well as special equipment for oil and gas enterprises, energy and road construction organizations.
The plant was founded in 1992. The first manipulator assembled in the company’s workshops was the Finnish FISKARS F300 manipulator (now LOGLIFT, with a lifting capacity of 9 tons). The first manipulators consisted of 80% imported components, but gradually the plant switched to components from domestic manufacturers. In 2011, the plant became the property of the Austrian concern PALFINGER, which paid €14 million for the enterprise and thus occupied half of the Russian market for general-purpose manipulators and attracted stable orders from the oil and gas industry... To date, INMAN CJSC has developed eight basic models hydraulic manipulators and more than eighty modifications of different lifting capacities. • euro platform capable of accommodating 18 euro pallets • increased load capacity - 14 tons • the truck is equipped with a 300 hp CUMMINS engine. With. • specific fuel consumption has been significantly reduced - up to 20% • the labor intensity of repair and maintenance has been significantly reduced - up to 25% • to increase vehicle safety, a roll stabilizer has been introduced into the front suspension design (which is especially important when installed on a CMU chassis) • drum-type braking system with pneumatic drive has been significantly improved: the brake chambers have been enlarged, cast brake calipers and ABS have been installed
INTERESTING FACT
The first braking systems were used on horse-drawn vehicles: the horse that accelerated the cart itself could not stop it.
Even then, they began to use a system of levers for braking: a wooden block, covered with leather, braked the wheel, pressing directly against the rim of the wheel itself. With the development of transport, the braking system was improved. The first disc brakes were invented and patented in England by William Lanchester in 1902. In the same year, French engineer Louis Renault also patented another type of brake - a drum brake with a semicircular shoe. As the power of cars increased, it was necessary to improve the braking system. At the end of the sixties of the last century, an anti-lock braking system was developed in America, otherwise ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), which was first installed on Chrysler vehicles in 1971. KAMAZ-65117 936010 78(N3) is equipped with a high-quality ZF 9S 131 OTO gearbox with mechanical remote control. To start in the cold season, this model is equipped with a pre-heater of the PZD 15.8106-01 system. The on-board voltage on the truck is 24 V, the engine starts from two 12 V batteries. The car has a large panoramic window with a sun visor.
Thanks to all the improvements made, the truck has become even more reliable and safe to operate, accessible to consumers, quickly pays for itself and has an increased service life of up to 15%.

Model range "KAMAZ"
Every driver knows that every car has its own characteristics. If we consider the machines of this manufacturer in series, we can note in-series models with indexes 5320 and 53212. They are used for long-term transportation of even the heaviest loads. These vehicles can easily travel about 320 kilometers without requiring additional fuel.
Among the towing vehicles there are also excellent models that appeal to many drivers and have proven themselves to be among the most reliable. Only two of the entire series can really be distinguished: the KamAZ 6460 and KamAZ 5460 vehicles. The latter is considered an example for transporting light trailers.
If we consider dump bodies, we can focus on models 6520 and 45141. They handle the road quite well, have all-wheel drive, and their capacity is up to 16 tons.
